Why metal fines behave badly
Grinding dust is fine, dense and sharp. It settles quickly rather than drifting, which means it concentrates near the source, but foot and wheel traffic then carries it across the site with remarkable efficiency. It embeds in floor coatings and in the soles of boots, it corrodes when it meets moisture leaving rust marking on light surfaces, and it damages equipment wheels and bearings.
The consequences show up in places nobody connects to the workshop: rust spots on an office floor, a chair castor that has seized, marks on a customer vehicle. Because the cause is remote from the effect, sites frequently treat these as separate problems. Recognising the single source is what turns a set of complaints into one manageable control task. Recording where marks are appearing away from the workshop also helps identify which crossing point is carrying the material, which is the useful information.
